IT’S TIME FOR THE OLYMPICS                             tim@wrsw.net

Ok, I am ready for the Olympics to begin.

We have gotten through the NBA finals, the NBA draft, all the interleague series in major league baseball, the Stanley Cup, the college world series and NASCAR and the Indy racing leagues are in the middle of their racing seasons.

This month we will have the MLB all star game and some big motor races but we have officially entered the lowest time of the year for a sports fan.

I mean ABC and ESPN tried to make Euro 2008 a big event. But honestly unless you are a soccer junkie or just moved to the United States from Europe had you ever heard this event before this year. I do not even know their ratings but it probably was decent since it was so hyped and people are staying home more with the high gas prices..

In previous years we have had Lance Armstrong and other Americans competing at the top of the Tour De France, but with the drug scandals there and not a major American name at the top this event will have to be built back up.

Wimbledon has the incomparable Roger Federer and the Williams sisters but does not have me excited this year for whatever reason.

But then over the weekend I was able to watch part of the swimming and track Olympic qualification meets and I got so excited I was like a little kid in the candy store.

Yeah, I know the Olympics have become a corporate event and long gone are the days of amateurs and no positive drug tests, but I just could not help it. I was awed by these athletes I even watched them over the start of the Sox-Cubs game Sunday night.

Now if I can get just get NBC to present the Olympics like the Canadian Broadcasting Company the Olympics will be great. I will talk about that in a future blog.

Have a great 4th weekend!!!
